Whats New at RobinsonThe University of Akron recognizes RMH nurseRavenna, Ohio (Sept. 26, 2007) – Robinson Memorial Hospital recently selected Paula Ackerson, RN, to attend The University of Akron’s Cameos of Caring nursing gala on Oct. 20. The Cameos program is presented by the College of Nursing and will recognize 14 excellent nurses from 11 regional hospitals. Each designee must demonstrate excellence in nursing care, serve as an effective advocate for patients and families and act as a role model for the nursing profession. “Paula works tirelessly to deliver excellent patient care,” said colleague Karen Hanshaw, RN, a certified diabetes educator. “She picks up subtle changes in a patient’s condition and acts on them immediately.” Ackerson is an oncology nurse and has worked at RMH for 24 years. She currently cares for cancer patients and those at the end of life. Ackerson said the best part of her job is educating patients and families about managing pain and the side effects of cancer treatments. “When you teach someone, you empower them, and they trust you,” she said. “They’re better able to cope with their illness and make decisions. I think of myself as a warrior – I fight disease, apathy and ignorance.” The Cameos program was designed to draw attention to nursing shortages and to attract potential nurses to the field. Nationwide, hospitals need about 118,000 RNs to fill vacant positions. This is the third year RMH has participated in Cameos of Caring. Previous winners include Cathy DeLair, RN, OCN, (2006) and Mary Beth Penkala, RN, CNS, MSN, (2005). This year’s nominees from RMH were: • Amy Chiccarino, RN, Birth Center • Julie Dasch, RN, 3 East • Robin Martinelli, RN, ICU/CCU • Holly Quinn, RN, ICU/CCU • Marcia Richards, RN, Birth Center • Sallie Wawrin, RN, Birth Center • Roxie West, RN, Birth Center • Debbie Wolff, RN, PACU |
