Ravenna, Ohio, July 11, 2011 - The Brimfield Lions Club recently hosted its third Power Walk for Diabetes, a fundraiser for the Robinson Memorial Hospital Diabetes Care and Education Center and for TownHall II.

Approximately 50 walkers participated in the Power Walk for Diabetes, which raised $7,600 for diabetes education and treatment in Portage County.

Since its inception three years ago, the Power Walk for Diabetes has raised $21,500 for diabetes education and treatment in Portage County.

Lions Club International supports local and large-scale efforts to control diabetes and diabetic retinopathy, the leading case of vision loss in adults of working age in industrialized countries.

Lions Clubs have adopted diabetes awareness as a long-term commitment. The work of Lions supports diabetes education, treatment, research and early detection.

Diabetes has no cure and frequently leads to other major health complications including kidney disease, cardiovascular disease and blindness. People with diabetes have a multi-system, chronic disease that is best monitored and managed by healthcare professionals trained with the latest information on diabetes to help ensure early detection and appropriate treatment of the serious complications of the disease. People with diabetes can reduce their risk for complications if they are educated about the disease, learn and practice the skills necessary to better control their blood glucose, blood pressure, and receive regular check-ups from their healthcare team.

The educational program of the Robinson Memorial Hospital Diabetes Care and Education Center provides patients with information regarding control of high and low blood sugars, diabetes medication and home blood glucose monitoring. Each patient is assisted with goals for diet, weight control, and an exercise regimen. Frequent evaluations of progress are provided.

"The Robinson Memorial Hospital Foundation, through which funds are directed to those in need of diabetes education, is grateful for the hard work of the Brimfield Lions Club and all of those who walked in the Power Walk for Diabetes," said Deborah Solan, Foundation Director.
